Students will use an interactive website tool to determine:
o the sex composition of babies with a particular name
o the rates at which boys and girls are given that name
o state variation in the rank of a name of their choice
Students will interpret analyses.
Students will learn the advantages and disadvantages of using an interactive website tool.
I have used this module in a summer bridge program that I co-directed and in an honors course on power, identity, and naming taught by a colleague. It assumes that students have a laptop computer with internet access. The slides that accompany the handout for the module can be found at RPubs: https://rpubs.com/karajoy/
This module is designed for a 75-minute workshop for undergraduate students. It uses fun exercises to highlight the distinction between demographic composition and rates.
This module demonstrates how to use an interactive website tool to analyze data collected by the Social Security Administration on baby names.
I modeled this after some of the other SSDAN examples but use different data.
This module could include a slide on the use of the SSA data in academic research.
