How do I use WebCHIP 4.0?

1. To get started using WebChip 4.0, you must first choose your dataset collection. Click on the “Collection” drop-down menu located under “Choose Dataset.” From there you can select your desired dataset. The collections contain different types of data. Trend type datasets contain longitudinal data on different datasets covering topics from education to marriage. The gss dataset also contains assorted trend data. Geo type datasets contain state by state data on education, immigration, income, and marriage. 1yr datasets contain data from the year before the “_”.

2. Choose your desired dataset from the “Dataset” drop down menu to select the type of data you would like to analyze.

3. Next, by using the “Compute Marginals” button located on the left side, WebCHIP will automatically compute the marginals for the variables in the dataset. These will be displayed as tables in the “Workbook” area located at the center of the screen

4. Next, you must choose your Crosstab Variables. Select your Row Variable by clicking on the drop down menu labeled “Select Row” (located under the header “Choose Variables”)

5. Then, select your Column Variable by clicking on the drop down menu labeled “Select Column” (located under the header “Choose Variables”).

6. Once you have selected both your Row and Column Variables, you can display your data. Locate the header “Generate Table” on the left side of your window. From there, you may select one type of crosstable from “Frequency”, “Percent Across”, or “Percent Down.”

7. You can also display your results graphically. Once you have chosen your Row and Column Variables, locate the header “Generate Chart.” From there, you may select one of four different graph options: “Bar,” “Pie,” “Line,” and “Stacked Bar.”

8. If you would like to examine more variables in your data, you can add control variables. First, find the header “Choose Variables.” From there, you will find a list located under “Control Variable.” Check the box next to your desired variable to make it a control variable, and you may select more than one.

9. Once you have selected your control variable(s), you can create a table to view your data. Locate the header “Generate Table” on the left side of your window. From there, you may select one type of crosstable from “Frequency”, “Percent Across”, or “Percent Down.”

10. You can also display your results graphically with control variables. WebCHIP will create a graph for each combination of control variables and display them individually. Once you have chosen your control variable(s), locate the header “Generate Chart.” From there, you may select one of four different graph options.
