SUMMARY:Dynamics of Business Establishments and Firms: A Complement to the Dynamics of Workers
DESCRIPTION:The U.S. Census Bureau and the Local Employment Dynamics (LED) Partnership in collaboration with the Council for Community and Economic Research (C2ER) and the Labor Market Information (LMI) Institute, welcomes Spencer Knoll and Richard Beem as they present, “Dynamics of Business Establishments and Firms: A Complement to the Dynamics of Workers.” In this presentation, Spencer gives an overview of the recently released 2022 Business Dynamics Statistics (BDS) time series and the BDS Explorer Tool, which provides access to the entire BDS dataset via line charts, bar charts, and thematic maps. The time series provides measures of business dynamics, such as job creation and destruction, establishment births and deaths, and firm startups and shutdowns across a wide range of establishment and firm characteristics. In addition, Richard introduces a new experimental BDS data product that measures the business dynamics of firms that received pandemic aid backed by the Small Business Administration (SBA). Focusing specifically on firms that received funding from the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP), Richard will describe what types of businesses participated in PPP and how their measures of business resilience compared to non-recipients.\nAbout the Presenters\nSpencer Knoll is a survey statistician with the Business Statistics Branch of the U.S. Census Bureau. He leads the production and dissemination of the Longitudinal Business Database (LBD) and Business Dynamics Statistics (BDS) time series, which spans from 1978-2022. Spencer regularly engages with researchers and data users, and he has presented in several webinars to promote the wide variety of uses and applications of BDS data. He works extensively with the BDS Explorer data visualization tool, where users can compare, rank, and visualize BDS data across time, NAICS industry, geography, and/or establishment and firm characteristics. Spencer has a bachelor’s degree in biostatistics from Penn State University.\nRichard Beem is an economist at the U.S. Census Bureau’s Center for Economic Studies (CES). As a member of the Longitudinal Business Database (LBD) team, he is responsible for the development and production of several experimental Business Dynamics Statistics (BDS) datasets. These include BDS products that examine single-unit firms and recipients of pandemic funding, most notably the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP).
