At this time, SSDAN is accepting applications from current University of Michigan students for the following positions: Research Assistant, Project Coordinator, and Programmer. Preference will be given to students with junior year or earlier standing for Programmer and Research Assistant candidates. Project Coordinator candidates are usually graduate students. Students whose skills span across the various positions (e.g, research, web-design, programming, and/or graphic design) are highly encouraged to apply.
 

RESEARCH AND WRITING

Assistant in Research / Research Assistant II
Wage: $7-12 for Assistant in Research; $11-14 for Research Assistant II

Research assistant will be exposed to hands-on experience in social science research and in communicating research results to educators and policymakers through a variety of media. Potential to write and publish significant original works. Research using U.S. Census data to study demographic and social change in America. Depending on skills, interests, and background of research assistant, position will include writing social science curricular and tutorial materials, researching and writing about demographic issues, and creating tables in Excel. Qualifications: strong interest in the social sciences, good writing skills, experience using Excel. Applicants with experience using GIS-mapping software are strongly encouraged to apply. Preference will be given to students in junior or earlier standing, as well as to students whose skills overlap with other needs (e.g. web-design, programming, and/or graphic design). 8-15 hours/week, flexible. Project Coordinator
Wage: $14-18

The project coordinator is expected to manage projects and provide oversight to a student staff working on research and media projects. Based at the University's Population Studies Center, the coordinator will work closely with William H. Frey, an experienced researcher on US demographic topics. The position presents a unique and excellent opportunity for a graduate student or exceptional undergraduate to experience the many facets of project management. Strong interest in the social sciences as well exposure to any of the following is desirable: web and computer technologies, outreach or communications, curriculum development, and grant writing. Qualified candidates are likely to come from one of the social sciences or related professional programs including business administration, public policy, social work, natural resources and environment, or education. The position is part-time, approximately 8-15 hours/week. The new coordinator will receive guidance from the current coordinator during the first several months. Preference will be given to applicants interested in staying with the project for the tenure of their education and to students with work-study awards. TECHNOLOGY AND DESIGN

Programmer I
Wage: $8-15/hr.

Programmer will have opportunities to work on independent projects and develop resources of their own design. Programmer will hold lead role in working with team of designers and writers to maintain and update current websites. Responsibilities include writing and revising CGI scripts, designing and updating web databases, and administering web server. Existing scripts include data set search engines and dynamic graphing routines to communicate demographic research results to educators and policymakers. Qualifications: Experience with network/server administration, Perl, UNIX, Apache, MySQL, and HTML. Experience with Visual Basic, Flash, Scheme, or GIS is a plus. Web Designer
Wage: $9.40-15/hr.

Web designer will work on team with programmers and writers to build and maitain nationally visible web sites. Desiner will help design site look-and-feel, prepare web-ready graphics, define site architecture, and write HTML. Existing sites, including www.CensusScope.org and www.frey-demographer.org, support social science curriculum development projects, provide access to publications, and provide easy-to-use Census data access. Basic qualifications: HTML, Photoshop, Illustrator, UNIX. Desired qualifications: style sheets (CSS), Flash, print design experience, Excel, ArcView. Hours: 8-15 hours/week, flexible.

Graphic Artist I
Wage: $8-15/hr.

Design pamphlets, page spreads, graphs, maps, web sites, and logos. Conceptualize, design, and create web- and print-ready graphics. Qualifications: Photoshop, Illustrator, PageMaker. Also helpful: HTML or HTML editor (such as Dreamweaver), style sheets (CSS), Excel, ArcView. Hours: 5-12 hours/week, flexible. Flexible work schedules and fun work environment.
 

OFFICE

Office Assistant / Program Assistant
Wage: $7-12

Update databases, prepare mailings, and plan workshops for social science research and curricular project. Good time-management, organizational, and communication skills are essential. Experience with Macs and PCs, Word, Access, and FileMaker is desired. Experience with Excel or HTML is a plus. Hours: 8-15 hours/week, flexible. Flexible work schedules and fun work environment.
